Scouting for Food Nov 2009 - Thanks for coming out in large numbers to support our Scouting-for-Food Drive.
Because of your support and willingness to participate, we were able to add an extra neighborhood this year.

The numbers are in and we collected 2,072 food items + certificates for three free turkeys
Great job!

The New Hope Ministries food pantry in Mechanicsburg was where we took the three truckloads of our donations.
They were thrilled with the large number of food items collected and extremely appreciative.

Winter Camp Feb 27, 2009 - Troop 80 held another great winter camp the weekend of Feb 27th.  Twenty Seven scouts and adults enjoyed a brisk winter weekend full of activities and great food.  Our Friday cracker barrel theme was Pies, Pies and More Pies.  After the scouts got into the pies, there wasn't a slice left.   Friday night was capped off by a competitive dictionary game.   On Saturday we started the day with a pioneer breakfast with Chicken-Fried steak, potatoes, eggs and cornbread.  The scout had a game of dodge ball followed by a hike to our summer camp site.  Lunch was Mexican with plenty of tacos.  The troop then spent a couple of hours at the shotgun range where scouts and adults showed their skills.  Our super bowl dinner was a hit with pizza, wings, nachos and meatballs.   Following the star wars movie, the troop capped off the night with Ice Cream sundaes.   On Sunday, we got up early, had a hearty breakfast and left for home.   Troop 80 had a great weekend of camping   Thanks to everyone how helped to make this outing successful.

Downtown Daily Bread Service Project Feb 16, 2009  - Below is a photo of the Downtown Daily Bread cooks and crew with our Troop 80 helpers.  Everyone is smiling after serving 126 hot lunches on President's Day.  Scouts prepared the dining area for lunch; served entrees, side dishes, drinks, and desserts; distributed the Troop 80 cookie bags; bussed trays for the dish washer; cleaned tables; stacked chairs; mopped the floors; and left feeling good inside about Doing a Good Turn for the needy in Harrisburg. Participating Troop 80 Scouts--Kyle, Peter, Scott, Brian, and Grant--each earned 3 service hours.  Additional helpers included Andrew , Mrs. Bitting, Mr. Breen, Mrs. Breen, and Mr. Larimer.  This was a successful project and the soup kitchen staff really appreciated our help.  Special thanks to all of Troop 80 for baking and bagging cookies!!

Scout Sunday 2009 - I want to thank everyone who participated in the Scout Sunday services at the Mechanicsburg Presbyterian Church today.  The Cub Scouts did a great job serving as greeters and fellowship hour hosts.  We had many compliments on the excellent treats that were served!  The Boy Scouts and leaders did a great job serving as readers and ushers, and I appreciated their help with the fellowship hour as well.  Special thanks to William S. for coordinating this event.  It is really nice to see the pack and troop participate in the services of our chartering organization on Scout Sunday.

Blood Drive Jan 31, 2009 - The blood drive on Saturday January 31, 2009, was successful and a big thank you goes out to Scott B., Cameron S., and Brian L. who earned 3 service hours each.
Special thanks to the Troop 80 leaders that donated a pint and assisted the host troop (T195) with the event!  Blood donors were Mrs. Breen, Mr. Stevens, Mr. Larimer, and Mr. Breen.
Paul Larimer was a first-time donor.

Church Clean-up a HUGE Success - We had a total of 25 scouts, leaders, parents, and siblings from Troop 80 and Pack 80 assist with our annual Fall clean-up of the yards and gardens at Mechanicsburg Presbyterian Church.  The day was windy and an incredible number of tasks were completed from tree and shrub trimming to mowing.  Raking tons of leaves and hauling them to Keller Street was the biggest job.  The participants were good sports throughout the day. The church is our chartering organization and the efforts of the scouts are sincerely appreciated.  A big Thank You to all the workers for a job well done!

2,100 Items Collected at Scouting for Food - We did it!  We took on a bigger area this year and the result was a total of 2,100 food items collected and delivered to New Hope Ministries Food Pantry in Mechanicsburg.  New Hope Ministries was very appreciative of all the efforts from the Pack and Troop. From 553 items in 2007 to 2,100 in 2008...a great success for this service project!  I hope all the scouts had fun and want to do it again next year.  A sincere thank-you to all the participants.   Great job everyone!

Corn Maze Campout - The troop had an great time at the corn maze campout the weekend of October 17th.  The troop and three Webelos arrived late on Friday night to set up tents and camp in the dark.   The camp site in Lancaster central park was large, private and located next to a babbling brook.  The temperatures at night dipped into the 30's but everyone was prepared.  On Saturday after a hearty breakfast, we took a 4 mile hike crossing a covered bridge and seeing all of the changing leaves.   Following the hike, the troop and pack played a challenging game of bocce and had some trouble keeping up with Tim's throw of the Pallino.  After a good lunch, the troop traveled to the corn maze.  The troop and pack split into three groups.  Group one contained the pack and a few troop members (Brian, Matt, Tim), led by Tim.   Group two contained the remainder of the scouts and group three had Mr. Svitko, Mr. Breen and Mr. Philp.   After a hour and 12 minutes, the adult group thought they were the first out of the maze and used the PA system to taunt the scouts.  After leaving the maze, however, the adults realized that group two had beat them by 12 minutes.  After being in the maze for about two hours, a search party was sent to find group one.   The dinner on Saturday night was filling and was topped by an outstanding pineapple upside down cake.  This campout was a great experience for everyone.  Special thanks to Mr. Svitko for coordinating the event and to Mr. Larimer and Brian for getting all of the great food.

Planning Campout (August 15-17 - Complete) - The planning campout was another huge success with great participation and outstanding food.  The troop developed a creative schedule for 2009 while enjoying being out in nature.  The weather cooperated (in the low 50s at night) and the pit beef / seafood boil was a big hit.  Thanks to everyone who made this outing a success.  Special thanks to Mr. and Mrs. Duncan for the use of their cabin.   Attached is a draft copy of the 2009 plan.  This be reviewed at the next committee meeting for final approval.

Summer Camp (July 20th to 26th)  -  Another successful summer camp is over.  Twenty scouts and seven adults traveled to Treasure Island on the Delaware on July 20th for an enjoyable week on the river.  Equipment was moved onto the island via barge and the troop was set up in quickly in the scenic B-P camp site.  The troop explored the island and quickly figured out the daily schedule.  The mess hall served outstanding food and the scouts learned their waiter duties.  During the week, the scouts competed in numerous events and earned over 50 merit badges.  We survived  the Wednesday storm that dropped more than 4 inches of rain and provided us with the sound of Thunder most of the night.  The week was over before we knew it and we were back on the barges to return home.  Thanks to all of the scouts and adults that made this summer camp a huge success.

Whitewater Trip -  Twenty four troop members set out to battle the rapids of the Youghiogheny river and I'm glad to report that 24 returned safely.  We arrived on Friday in time for each patrol to cook a filling meal of hamburgers and BLTs.  The large camp site gave us plenty of room to spread out and the camp had a big camp store, a swimming pool and a miniature golf course.  We got up early on Saturday, had a hot meal of eggs and sausage and got fitted for our life vests.  We were on the river by 9:30 just as the rain started and kept up all day.   The water was about 62 degrees and the class 3/4 rapids were big.  A few of us got thrown out and Mr. Duncan's raft got flipped over at dimple rock.  We were all wet but had a fun trip.  Mr. Duncan injured his arm and went to the hospital to get it checked out.  He is doing alright but is a little sore.  We had a nice dinner and returned to a warm campfire featuring S'mores, popcorn and a visit from a pesky raccoon.  We left early Sunday morning with a lot of great stories to tell.
